i have a girl crush...

...on drew. who don't? she's grunge, she's divorced from her parents, she was in rehab for drug addiction when she was only 13. she's in e.t.! love her. i have a pop magazine from a few years back that i just can't throw away (sorry, "recycle") cos it has these awesome photos of drew just defining kurtcouture! the cute bunnies and purple lipstick just sum up everything this blog is about. the contrast between the vivienne westwood check and cashmere jumper in the photo below are exactly what i look for in fashion and style

drewbarrymore.com
must also mention drew's love life. two very brief marriages including a 5 month marriage to comedian tom green (daddy would you like some sausage??) followed by a five year relationship with fab moretti from the strokes! fiiiiit! she's famously openly bisexual too, a rare public admition compared with the rest of hollywood. but then, should we surprised? the girl's been in the public eye since she was five.

people.com
so i've picked out a few photos of drew looking mint. she really does grunge chic perfectly. when i grow up, i want to be just like her...x

an old fave to warm up...

...for tonight's long awaited this is england '88. i...can't...waiiiiiiiit. now i'm off to put on my pj's and pork pie hat - wait, it's 1988 now right? ok, pj's and casual sports jacket then - and dance around my room to the smiths for the next twenty minutes waiting for lol and woody and shaun and whitey and all dem uva social misfits to grace my screen with their addictive misery once again (intake of breath).

not the best quality vid, but please take a few minutes to watch it and take in the eighties vibes from our kevin rowland with this dungaree-clad classic by dexy's midnight runners - come on eileen...x

best photo ever?

fuckyeahollywood.tumblr.com

it certainly gets me excited! the glory days of johnny depp and kate moss. it was the 90s. she was the new face of the supermodel world. he was the sexiest man alive. they were the epitome of grunge and heroin chic. forget the beckhams, they were (and i wish they STILL were!) the golden couple of celeb-dom. sigh, sadly it didn't last...but that only means there's still hope for me! and by that i'd mean i'd take any of them...x

angela chase. pre-juliet clare danes played the angst-ridden teenager in american teen series 'my so called life'. emotional, confused and with THE HOTTEST on/off beau of all time (jared leto, who else?!)
the 15 year old represented pretty much every teenage girl in the modern world. and with an a-maaaa-zing grunge wardrobe to boot, she'll always have a place in my heart

just ask clarissa...she'll explain it all. failing that, ask her geeky brother ferguson. (still) failing that, put up a set of ladders outside your bedroom window and invite your boy pals to explain it for you.

won't you take me to....

...funky nails!

barry m nail varnishes £3.99 each

courtesy of barry m! ok so i might have taken the time to neaten the edges before i loaded this pic but it was going dark! soooo, first you apply your base coat (of course!) then your chosen colour. i've gone with barry m's instant effects gold. then comes the magic part...apply a coat of barry m's instant cracked effect and allow it dry. it goes on almost like a full colour (in this case black, but there are other colours available too!) but don't panic! after a few seconds it starts to separate into this "cracked" effect. instant false-look nails without the fear of breaking one off in your lovers bed...erm...well...that's just my opinion...x

kate moss monday...

...ok i'm aware it's tuesday. it just flowed nicely in my head. watching mary queen of frocks, sponsored  by moss's rimmel lipstick collection. and it got me thinking...when will this woman stop being so damn influential. kate moss that is, not mary portas. but please don't think i'm disrespecting portas, this entry just isn't about her. so anyways, rimmel is a make-up brand for young girls. moss is married with a nine year old in tow and on the wrong side of 35. despite being the face of rimmel for many years one might have thought that with the appearance of younger stars zooey deschanel and alexa chung in more recent campaigns, it was the end of moss's rimmel domination. and then bam! a new lipstick range with her name on it. maybe it was her recent marriage to the kills guitarist jamie hince that sparked a renewed interest in the british favourite, but whatever the reason behind rimmel's contract renewal, i think it's easy to see that despite her age, her settled family life, her cellulite, she's still kate moss - queen of the kids...but that's just my opinion...x

this is, like, sooo my favourite film...

...it's nineties classic clueless! i think i saw this when i was about 8 and completely fell in love with cher (she'd have been about 8 years older than me at the time, idol much?!) the hair, the clothes, the pals, what girl didn't want to be her?? my interest in fashion started around this era too so this movie has a lot to answer for, it made me into the person am today...ok let's not go nuts.

amyellecartwright.blogspot.com
i always remember that despite there being several "baldwins" in clueless it was never about the boys for me, i was just totally engulfed in the AMAZING clothes! examples...

amyellecartwright.blogspot.com
retrothreadz
grrrr i can't find any good quality stills of the calvin klein or alaia dresses, but i guess if you're reading this (and feigning any sort of interest) you've seen the film and you know what i'm talking about.

the beauty of clueless is that it's not as girly-girl as you'd first think. it's 1994 and the era of grunge is still in full swing and there are several references to the fashion at the time, albeit comments of the unimpressed variety "So okay, I don't want to be a traitor to my generation and all but i don't get how guys dress today. I mean come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we're expected to swoon at it? I don't think sooo"

here you go miss winehouse...

...your free membership to the 27 club, i hope you will enjoy your stay. oh amy, we all hoped you'd pull through but i guess the iron grip of drink and drugs had you too firmly in it's grasp. i will challenge anybody who says she deserved her fate and the fact that the sad news came on the same day as the tragic attacks in oslo casts no shadow over the impact of a brilliant musician's untimely death. it's a terrible loss to the music industry, the girl knew her shit. rewind 8 years when the nu-indie scene dominated music, amy blew a breath of fresh air through the charts with her first album 'frank'.

the sun, 2011

fast forward a couple and (with the trumpety input of mark ronson) 'back to black' was released which, and i don't say this lightly, in my opinion is one of the best albums of the last ten years. however with this came the beginning of the end. a very new look encompassed a a very new career height. tattoos, a shockingly skinny body and a narcotics addiction just. ruined. everything.

mail online, 2008

anyways, i doubt there's any need for further details. you know what happens at the end of this story. on the 23rd july 2011, aged 27, amy winehouse was found dead in her north london home and joined the notorious "27" club. here's a quick appreciation of the elite membership so far...

in.com, 2011
1943 - 1971 The Doors frontman Jim Morrison. A massive influence on...well...every rock band since the seventies. The three D's, drink, drugs, depression equaled the big O, overdose.

listal.com, 2011
1967 - 1994. this blog is called kurtcouture. if you're reading this i'd expect you to know the story of this guy. nuff said

michaelarnoldart.com, 2011
1943 - 1970. you know you've got it...waaaa aaaah!!!! dead at 27 is what you get from shooting smack. poor janis found out the hard way. absolute fucking waste of a talent.

my sixties love.blogspot.com, 2011
1942 - 1969. "i hope you went out smiling like a child into the cool remnant of a dream" jim morrison's words about the death of rolling stones original brian jones. ironically morrison died two years later on the same date.

rogerogreen.com, 2011
1911 - 1938. musician's who die young are not only linked with rock music. blues great robert johnson also bit the dust at the tender age of 27. details of his death are poorly documented but it's believed he was poisoned.

clashmusic.com, 2010
1942 - 1970. jimi. greatest electric guitar player who ever lived. he became the greatest electric guitar player who ever died aged 27.

so many greats with so many problems in so little time. and with amy winehouse becoming the latest victim we can only speculate as to why 27 has spelt the coincidental end for so much talent. however one thing is obvious, addiction is at the root of the tragedy. a path to self destruction has robbed us of too many special people and in a media obsessed society i suspect this will only worsen. but that's just my opinion...x
